Denmark

The Danish Police (Rigspolitichefen) provides individuals with an extract from the individual’s Danish criminal record free of charge. These certificates are known as ‘penal certificates’ (Straffeattest).

Application Procedures

The request for a Danish ‘penal’ certificate may be made in person or in writing to the Police Commissioner’s Kriminalregister at the following address:

If applying from within Denmark, a request can also be made in person or in writing at a local police station.

The written request must make clear that you require a ‘Straffeattest’ (penal certificate) and include the following information:

Cost

The Danish Police make no charge for producing penal certificates.

Content of Certificates

Those sentences which are considered serious enough to have resulted in a custodial sentence (suspended or otherwise) or a suspension of rights (e.g. a sentence involving treatment of some kind) are not deleted until the person concerned has reached 80 years of age.

Fines are deleted after 5years (certain contraventions of the Road Traffic Act) or after 10 years from the decision.

Only certain offences where sanctions were completed between 2 and 5 years ago will be disclosed on the certificate, depending on the offence committed.

Turnaround Times

You should receive the penal certificate within a week of submitting the application (subject to normal postal delivery timescales).
